What is the best type of mulch to use around my Hostas?

    cedar mulch

    I use shredder cedar. It is more expensive but the cedar acts as a deterrent to some of the bugs - and I have always hoped maybe the slugs. Cedar also holds up longer than the typical pine bark mulch.

    coco bean hulls or wood chip

    I use either wood mulch or my own compost, both seem to work well

    Mine along the sidewalk have completely filled in, I don't use anything since it can't be seen and I don't get weeds because it is so dark underneath. The only thing I have to do is pull the maple saplings from the seeds that make it to the ground from the huge maple above it.

    Any will work, but peat moss will really help keep moisture in the soil longer.

    I would use the red cedar to a depth of 3-4 inches.
