We live in a hot summer climate but they do get afternoon and evening shade.

Succulents are pretty low maintenance. Use the right kind of soil and don't over water and they are happy. I live in zone 4, so I keep mine indoors almost all year, and they rarely get direct sun, but thrive from well lighted (by sunlight) rooms and not too much water. If you've already planted and are having issues, what are they? Otherwise, plant away and watch them grow!

  • That is perfect! I am in a hot, dry dusty climate too. I have mine on the north side of the house and they grow like weeds for me. Mine also take more water than is typically recommended due to single digit humidity. So I give them a sprinkle every few days when it is above 90°, right now over 100°.

I live in Arizona and have succulents in the front which gets afternoon and evening shade like you do. I water them once a week and they are healthy and thriving.

I live in the Phoenix area and have found that some of the succulents just can't take the heat even if they have no direct sun in the summer here. I am trying some more varieties on my covered patio this year. Some different varieties of jade plants mostly. Hoping they get through next week when we hit 120!! I do agree that they need more water here than what you usually hear.

O.K but the ones I have had thrive in the shade

Thanks, everyone! I will probably need to start over since mine don't look like they're going to make it. But I will take all of your advice into consideration!
