It depends on what type of orchid medium you like to use. Some swear by the medium that is more like soil, some orchid bark. I find it easier to use the bark and the six orchids I have seem to like it and it is easy to care for the plants. I always have the two pot system, an inner plastic pot with drainage holes and a decorative pot for the outside pot. I can soak the orchids in tepid water with the outside pot on, dump the water out of it after the inner pot is removed to drain, drain the wood medium well and put it back in the decorative pot. The wood keeps the roots moist by the humidity they give of, which is how the orchids live in the canopies in the rain forest. I hope this helps, use the medium that you are more comfortable with, they are your plants to care for.
