I would trim it first before transplanting. Just make sure to remove as much of the root ball as possible and if it's really big, get someone to help move the plant. They can be a bit heavy

Yes go ahead and trim it first. I transplanted some once - just be sure to dig way around the bottom to get all of the root ball. This was a 2 person job for me for sure. But we moved the hydrangeas into a less sunny area and it was totally worth it! Good luck!
