there could be several reason,temperature changes fro hot to cold or cold to hot.insects or fungus.When and how were they watered?Did any of the above happen?Did you notice any insects? Were the leaves lack?
Probably a fungus from too much water--lots of rose care things are available!
I had rabbits eat the leaves off my roses....leafcutter ants will eat leaves off also. Are you watering the plants enough?
This may depend on the heat, soil, and temps outside. This is a diff. yr. for many states. This is hard to say, tho I would start with digging 2" of soil away from the main trunk of rose, and putting the fresh peat soil., give this a bit of fresh water, then cover it in more black soil, or even put leaves that are dead between the layers of black dirt.
