1. Prepare the Fabric Strips
To start, gather your old socks.
Cut off the top and bottom to create a tube of fabric.
Then, cut down the length of the tube to open it up.
Now, cut the fabric into strips.
Repeat this process with a few different colored socks until you have a variety of fabric strips.
2. Apply Essential Oil
It's time to add the essential oil.
Eucalyptus oil is a great choice for repelling flies thanks to its strong scent.
Apply several drops of eucalyptus oil onto the scrap fabric strips.
3. Assemble the Fly Deterrent
Next, grab a shower curtain ring.
Take the fabric strips you've prepared and tie them onto the ring.
Mix and match colors for a fun look, or stick with a single color scheme—it's up to you!
You could even cover the whole ring with strips of fabric for a mini pest repelling wreath.
4. Hang Your Fly Deterrent
Now that your DIY fly deterrent is ready, find a suitable spot to hang it. Place a hook on the wall near windows or doors—these are common entry points for flies.

Karen Merseal on Jun 05, 2024I use water, ziplock sandwich bag and a tack.Fill ziplock about 1/4- 1/2 of the way with water. Zip bag closed, making sure to remove additional air. Use track to hang this above your door. Some people place a penny in the bag also.I'm not sure why it works, but it does. Once in awhile, a fly will get through. We have a restaurant in town that does this, especially over his drive up window.
