How to Patch Grass in a Shady Spot

Hi, I'm Amber Oliver. If you enjoy this project please visit my blog!

We have a few places in our backyard that we just can't seem to get grass to grow. Both are close to the back of the house and both have been re-sodded three times. At first we thought this was a drainage problem, and after correcting the issues with water after heavy rains some of the grass repaired. We also added gutters to help the grass and still had sevral areas that were almost pure dirt.

Here's how our grass looked before we started growing shade grass. Pretty ugly looking and it would get muddy each time it rained. We needed to figure out what to do here!

First thing I wanted to do was break up the soil. This can be heavy work with a shovel or hoe, so I used a tiller. This gives the grass seed a much easier time!

After racking and tilling the soil, I was ready to add grass seed. I found one that was a combination of mulch, seed, and fertilizer - everything we needed to grow our new shade grass!

Here's what the grass looked like with the seed. Now it's time to water (and keep watering!!) and wait for it to grow!

Here's the results after one week.

Here the area is after just 18 days! I can't wait for it to finish filling in! :)
