Make Your Own Leaf Mold (mould)

Leaf mold is great for adding much needed structure to your garden soil and is so easy (and free) to make yourself. Great fall garden project!

In the fall (autumn) gather up your leaves from the ground as they fall from the trees. Any leaves will work well.

If possible mow the leaves with your lawn mower so that they are broken up. This will help them to break down and form leaf mold quicker. Do not worry if you can't do this, it will just take longer.

Put the bits of leaves into a plastic bin bag and make holes in the bag so that water can get in. Water the leaves thoroughly and fasten the bag up. Keep it outside so that it gets rained on all winter. The leaves need to be moist to break down.

In the spring open up the bag and see if you have lovely leaf mold. If not, do not despair. Water it all thoroughly and leave it in the bag for longer. It will work eventually, just keep it damp.
