Grow and Use Stevia Plants in Place of Sugar

We have all heard about how bad sugar is for us. I love some sweetener in my coffee but we try to eat very little sugar. When I found out about the Stevia plant, I thought perhaps this would be a good alternative!

Now each year I grow a few Stevia plants, then prepare the leaves to use in tea and even baking. I start them indoors and grow all season long. You can plant seed anytime during the year if you want indoor plants.

Stevia is really very easy to grow - it seems to be sweeter than sugar, so less is more here!
You can buy Stevia seeds or buy bedding plants (starts). The plants grow quickly. You may want to transplant your stevia a couple of times, before it ends up in a large pot.
They grow lots of leaves which is what I want to harvest. You could have a stevia in a hanging basket.
Whenever I need more stevia, I just pinch off a bunch of leaves. Leave lots on each stem of the plant so the plant will keep growing.
Or you can use scissors and snip out entire "branches". Then snip all the leaves off the branch into a shallow bowl.

This is after I gave this plant a good trimming. Lots of leaves to use in tea but lots left on the plant for more growth.
