How to Repot a Pothos Plant

I have a Pothos plant on my porch that I’ve been meaning to repot for a long time. Well this weekend I finally got my act together and guess what? A bird built a nest in my hanging Pothos planter. Ugh, this is what happens when you procrastinate. But never fear, I saved a Golden Pothos from the clearance rack so we’ll repot that one while we wait for the eggs to hatch and grow up and leave the nest.

Bird nest in my Pothos

It is very cute though. Also, I really do enjoy birds so this is only a mild inconvenience. And it’s my own fault, I should have repotted this months ago.

New home

I bought this resin hanging planter. But, I’m not sure I’m going to hang it because I misplaced the chain. I saw an idea on TikTok with a Pothos and I’m going to give it a try. Stay tuned, it’s very different.

Add some drainage holes

Since there weren’t any holes, I added my own. I like to put them up the side so that some water can stay in the planter as a small reservoir.

I have my rather sad looking Pothos and my newly perforated pot. Let’s get to replanting.

I loosely followed this recipe.

I like to use cement mixing tubs to make my potting mixes.

Usually I use a plastic container to measure out the parts, today this jar was handy.

4 parts coco coir or peat moss

2 parts Perlite

1 part sand or vermiculite-I used sand because I couldn’t find vermiculite in stock locally.

Lastly, one part shredded bark

I mixed it up and this is where the recipe stops but I decided to add some secret sauce. Worm castings. We’ll see if it makes a difference or not.

I was generous with the worm castings.

Now my favorite part, mix it all up.

I fill the pot part way then add the plant.

I love the coloring of the Golden Pothos. Don’t worry about the discolored leaves. I’m about to snip them off.

And she’s all done!

Don’t forget to give your plant a good drink of water.

Now that there is more room for the roots to stretch out, I can’t wait to see this plant thrive.

I am keeping this plant here because it is right next to where I park my car. That way I don’t forget to water it.

Do you have a Pothos? I am forever taking cuttings and rooting them in water. It is so easy to multiply this plant.

I think the Pothos is the star of the show here.

I think Pothos are one of my favorite plants because they are very hard to kill.

What is your favorite plant for beginners?

I saw someone who propagated a bunch of plants and put them in tiny bottles with a bit of cork and gave them out as wedding favors. I love that idea!🥰

Happy planting!
