Pohutukawa in Full Bloom

This is our Pohutukawa tree (Metrosideros excelsa), sometimes known as New Zealand Christmas tree, because they normally flower then. But ours has always been a late bloomer, but so worth the wait. It is about 9 meters tall, age unknown, but the house was here just after WW2 on bare land.
It is literally a mass of flowers and alive with bees and birds after the nectar. The last photo is of the aerial roots, which are amazing too.

Douglas Hunt on Jan 03, 2014Beautiful tree. The flowers remind me of the bottlebrush. In the US it is planted with some frequency on the southern California coast.
