Call or visit your local nursery to get more information for your area and project.. lots of free ideas
I would check with the nursery in your area and it will also depend on your sun exposure, but we've planted hostas, day lilies and black eyed susans with great success in our front yard.
What zone are you in Karen? What exposure? North, south, east or west? All these variables will determine what will flourish in your space. I am in zone 9 and the front of my house faces west. Blazing hot (100° + in summer), so what works for me, might not be the best for you.
I agree about using a local nursery, although I would go in person since your zone, climate, etc. determines which would be best.
