What area do you live in?
it looks like it's some sort of bee balm
Looks like bachelor buttons but ours are blue.
Looks like a Centaurea. There are many different varieties, and you should be able to find one like the one you lost at an online nursery.
Bachelor buttons
I have this plant. I do not know it's name. We dug ours up in the spring before we moved last year. It survived our move and bloomed this year. We moved from Western NC to Coastal NC.
I'd love to know the name too. I bought two years ago off a clearance cart at Lowes. One didn't come back up last year, one is still blooming right now in my garden.
A few minutes on a google image search for "unusal perennials" and viola! It comes in purple too. Amethyst in Snow Mountain Bluet - Centaurea montana .
Centaurea montana 'Purple Heart'
From our extension experts: This plant is Centaurea and the cultivar could be "Purple Heart" or "Amethyst".
bachelor button is correct
That is called "Bachelor Buttons" They are beautiful and bloom almost all summer

It's beautiful ! Make cuttings so you will have more of it
Yes I know what it is...It's a perennial Bachelors Button called Amethyst in Snow. I have the same plant and also got it at Lowe's many years ago. It also comes in just plain purple. It will spread and you can take cuttings to divide. Be careful not to rip it out at the end of the blooming season as it needs to die back on it's own.....it can get a bit icky looking during this natural stage in it's life cycle.
Many are correct. Centaurea is the technical name, Bachelors Button the common name. I have the purple/blue and love it. Yes it perennial though I don't propagate it via cuttings, here in Western Washington I just let it seed on its own during its end of season blooming. I get them everywhere and transplant them where I want them. should be able to find them fairly readily, I saw your version at Lowes. Good luck.
