Since it is already damaged, I would try planting it deeper in a new pot. Worth a try, but if someone else has more experience, go with their ideas!
The pot should be twice the size width and depth of the root ball.Make sure the container has drainage holes and use only cactus soil
I would rather take some weight off the cactus and plant as is and re-root the top part..............
