You should prune flowering shrubs (including lilacs) just after they have finished blooming

Lilacs should be pruned immediately after flowering

I live in Rochester New York, the lilac capital of the world ! I know this!😊 The best time is to prune them as soon as the blooms turn brown, if you do it later than that you're cutting the bloom growth for the following spring. But if you are already passed the brown phase, you could still prune them, just understand that next spring you won't have many blooms. No worries though they will come back in a few years . We generally don't prune them unless they are inhibiting a window or something like that .
