What is your location? Is the soil workable? What is the lighting?

  • Wanda Wanda on Apr 30, 2017

Shade loving plants, shade loving grass. May require more water.

Hard to tell your location from the photo but azaleas are acid loving plants and tolerate shade well. You will have to water them. While at the store buying azaleas ask them about more plants to go there. Good luck!

Check your soil first. You may have to amend it to get the right pH to grow anything.

    Hostas!

  • Canadianlady Canadianlady on May 01, 2017

As people are saying, hostas are your friends in this situation. You can plant them in a ring around the tree. I've found that four fill in around the tree nicely as they get larger. You can put another ring of hostas around the first, ring, too, if you still need the coverage. I'd stagger the planting arrangement to fill all the gaps. There's a homeowner in my neighbourhood who's done just that, with two rings of hostas around his birch tree, and my huband and I always remark on how nice it looks. I copied his idea when I did my own single ring. Good luck.

I've got the same huge tree. The previous owners planted bulbs, which seem to be happy there. I've even had a tomatoe plant pop up this summer

I'm sorry I'm not helpful, but surrounded by pines and needles..........ALL I WANT to do is cut them all down. They are a pain where I live. Tall and thin poles. I hate them. You could probably figure out where I live.

I, too, have a giant pine in my front yard. The lemon tree seems to do OK. It's growing right under the pine. I didn't expect the pine to get so big...

I had a small Ivy plant and it wouldn't grow well anywhere..until I planted it under my pine tree! Seems that ivy, periwinkle (Vinca) and other ground covers love the acid soil under pines. It is also mostly in the shade in the afternoons too. Now I have to thin the ivy out and share it with neighbors because it took over the whole planting bed. Try Ivy or Vinca and they should work for you in any climate. I live in the high desert with clay soil and I don't' water much. Not many places with these bad conditions, but my garden is always overgrown. Good luck!

I have Mountain Snow ground cover growing under my evergreens. It's hard to plant anything else as you're always battling with roots from the trees. The ground cover has a very shallow root system, and the light green and creamy foliage is a great contrast with the dark evergreens. They die over the winter, but come back in full force in the Spring.

We have a pine tree that we planted Irises around that grew well. We did not make a bed, just dug a hole and planted the bulbs.

Why not start ones own colony of mushrooms... All sorts will grow under pine trees & look good too... Place them in moveable plastic box containers/air rated, dig holes the same shape to put into the ground & add moss over the top(this is to move around at times & not touch sporns with hands).. pine needles will mix but be gentle & remove as much during each week as possible... though this is only a seasonal project, though its lovely in autumn/winter~parts...

I found an extensive list on a gardening site for plants that will grow under your pine tree. They are azalea, aster, gardenia, bleeding heart, ferns, heather, lily of the valley, hydrangea, phlox, rhododendron, camellia, and strawberries. The strawberries were a big surprise to me. You could have a really nice flower bed under there. Get going and good luck!

Hostas - they come in many sizes and colors. Helped my neighbor plant them under her pine trees years ago as a trial. They grew really will and looked lovely.
