How can seeds be so cheap?I bought several packs of flower and herb seeds from Dollar tree, and none of them grew.Does anyone know how the store can buy and sell them for so little?I wonder what makes them cheap and poor quality? Where do they come from? I've learned my lesson!Next yr I'll spend more at a garden store, but at least I'll have something pretty to look at in my yard.

The fact that you have no idea where they come from is exactly why I wouldn't buy those seeds. Check and see if your local library has a seed exchange. Ours does. That way you'll not only know where they came from, but that they have actually produced in your area.

I've never heard of a seed exchange- great idea, thanks.

I would be willing that many of those dollar store seeds are seeds that are too old for notable companies to put their labels on. Invest in good seeds, then save them year to year

Somewhat on the same subject - buying seeds - more often than not wildflower seeds are laced with lots and lots of annual seeds and so they sell the packages for cheap - we like instant gratification and annuals are a snap but wildflowers often taken a couple of years to germinate, some need to be stratified and so when you are about to buy the real deal and wince when you see the price as $70.00 per ounce - you are pretty sure they are all wildflowers. I always read the label and if it doesn't tell me where they came from and what the seeds are - I don't buy.

More than likely they were old. Old seeds don't sprout well. Most reputable seed companies will put their seeds in big box stores with very strict instructions of when to pull them and they pick them up on time. They don't want customers to buy seeds that don't germinate and then never buy from them again. Burpee and Martha Stewart do that at Home Depot, where I work part time.
