Flower - unusual

Sherrie S
by Sherrie S
I planted several of these last year in a different area & this one moved itself between a cement walkway and cement border so I can't move it. I will soon plant more in a nicer area.

I love the color-what is it?
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Jun 13, 2012
Surprisingly I know the name: Common name is summer poinsettia. Fancy name is Amaranthus Gangeticus - Molten Fire.
  • Kim S Kim S on Jun 13, 2012
Did you plant from seed? I haven't seen them at the garden centers.
  • Jeanette S Jeanette S on Jun 13, 2012
This is funny! "That darn plant!" It just goes where it wants to the minute you turn your back! HA. Beautiful.
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Jun 13, 2012
Kim S, no it was a plant from our local nursery. Jeanette S, you are correct. That is how everything works here.
  • Susan S Susan S on Jun 13, 2012
So they just get up and walk on over to where ever they prefer to be huh?? Really, I do understand that cause I've had flowers show up in places I know darned good and well I did not plant them there!! And they say plants don't have brains!!! I can definitely see the poinsettia resemblance there. Cool plant!!
  • Chris T Chris T on Jun 13, 2012
They are called Amaranthus or Love Lies Bleeding and they will re-seed themselves if the conditions are right.
  • Dee W Dee W on Jun 13, 2012
thanks to you smartie pants that knew it's name.
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Jun 13, 2012
Dee W, I don't usually know the fancy names - in this case I asked my local nursery people what it was & I kept a record of it because it was so unusual. Susan S, do you think I would plant this pretty plant in nothing but cement on all sides of it? I guess you admitted that your plants replant wherever they want, too.
  • Douglas Hunt Douglas Hunt on Jun 14, 2012
Apparently it wanted to be where it could be the star of the show, a strategy that seems to have worked!
  • Susan S Susan S on Jun 19, 2012
Sherrie - does this plant produce seeds?? Ya know where I'm going w/this don't you?? Hey - this'll be ALOT simpler than transporting tads!!!
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Jun 19, 2012
Susan S, I guess it did produce seeds because it moved to that area by itself. I have no control over anything here. If I see seeds I will send you some. Thursday your dependants will be sent to you - they will be bottled in algae water.
  • Leida R Leida R on Jun 22, 2012
Sherrie, oh my, what a good looking self minded plant you have. Hehehe!!!
  • Marg C Marg C on Jun 23, 2012
bugers! every last one of them! They grow where you don't want them to and don't grow where you do! Such a pretty exotic looking plant.
  • Dene M Dene M on Jun 25, 2012
I love this plant. The red is so striking.
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Jun 26, 2012
Thank you for the nice comments and the laughs, too. Two weeks ago I decided to buy seeds because I want more of these plants. I hope these seeds don't move.
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 05, 2012
I planted (or should I say threw) the whole package of seeds in a little area. Looks like all the seeds sprouted so I'll need to thin them out so they don't suffocate. Maybe I should just let them alone and see where they voluntarily move to.
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 05, 2012
So how are the original plants doing now? Have you noticed any seeds or pods yet?? I definitely would love to have some. I'd need to wait til next spring to plant them but would probably try a couple indoors to see what happens. Wouldn't that be really pretty at C'mas time??
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 05, 2012
Susan S, I had only one plant that re-seeded itself. I recently bought some seeds and those are growing exceptionally fast. I can tell it is the same plant but I'll have to wait a bit to see the beautiful flower. I promise I will try to find seeds & send them to you & this time it won't be like the disaster. Trust ME!
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 05, 2012
Yeah - we're probably pretty safe with seeds!! LOL
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 05, 2012
    Jeeze, I hope so.

  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 07, 2012
Me either Becky!! As a matter of fact, I've heard of more things for the first time than I can count since I joined HT!! Guess what??? There's a great big wide world out there I apparently don't know nuthin about!! Continuing my higher education @ UHT!! LOL

LOL @ Susan. Count me in as a student too. And here I thought I was full of it!
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 08, 2012
I hope the seeds I planted turn out as pretty as the plant.
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 08, 2012
@Becky - well yeah, we KNEW that (you were full of it)!! LOL Sherrie - TLC & water & sunshine - your seeds should germinate into beautiful plants!!

ahhh, another one who knows how to use html...mirror lives you say!
  • Z Z on Aug 10, 2012
I don't know allot of HTML Marg, but enough to get by on groups.
  • Bernice H Bernice H on Aug 20, 2012
    ok, I will bite...HTML? IS?
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 20, 2012
Bernice the Acronym HTML is HyperText Markup Language. So what? This gives people the ability to use certain codes to make things prettier, bolder, lined up, etc. This means their posting can be prettier, nicer, more sophisticated than yours but not all sites support it. My opinion: Don't bother with it. It is among the oldest programming tools.
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 20, 2012
Look, I'd be just as happy w/cute lil emoticons, thank you very much! ;~) This is the best I can do!!! I like the silly smiley faces, frowny ones, goofy ones, mad ones . . . .you get it, right? LOL
  • Z Z on Aug 20, 2012
Yes Sherrie HTML has been around for quite awhile, as have I, but being old doesn't mean it's not useful anymore. At least I hope not. ;^) Bernice , websites are built using a combination of codes including HTML. Your browser reads these codes and allows you to view them as photos and graphics. You can see examples of HTML code and it's results at the following link.... http://www.craigslist.org/about/help/html_in_craigslist_postings/
  • Marg C Marg C on Aug 21, 2012
yes, I have made whole pages using html. It's not just a way to make things bolder or prettier.... It's the language that computers use for page development.
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 21, 2012
Marg C & Becky - I was only telling Bernice how an ordinary "non programmer" uses it to make things pretty on a site like Hometalk. I didn't think she wanted a detailed explanation - just an idea about it. I use this type of program to create instruction manuals so HTML is a powerful tool no matter how old it is. I was not trying to dismiss the importance of HTML. Susan S, stay with your smiley faces.
  • Z Z on Aug 21, 2012
Your last comment is what made me think you didn't like it Sherrie. It's not for everyone, but I love using it when I can to do things I could not otherwise do in certain groups.
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 21, 2012
    Becky, I understand completely.

Leida, I think Sherrie said she would save some seeds for us once it reaches that stage - am I right Sherrie?
  • Leida R Leida R on Aug 25, 2012
Susan S, she did say that before. I was just doing a little reminder. LOL!!!
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 25, 2012
Susan S & Leida R - the project I attempted was to buy seeds & make tons of those unusual flowers so I could send seeds to some hometalk sweethearts. Well, the seeds grew exceptionally well but now most of the plantings failed miserably. Some are still alive but only merely alive. Maybe they will move to a place they like?
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 25, 2012
awwwww! Well if they turn out to be perrieniels (I'm pretty sure I just murdered the spelling of that one) then maybe they'll come back. I don't know how you tell in Fl. since I'd think you practically have a 12 mo. growing season. Maybe the seeds are still viable (the new ones produced on the existing plants) so hopefully you'll see a bunch of new ones pop up like the stray one did!!
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 25, 2012
Waaaaa, Susan, I don't know if the original plant was annual or perennial - I just know I bought a few small plants & the one I posted came back after last winter. I also failed Dragons blood sedum seeds - Bought 5000 and now have 4 miserable looking things. I'm waiting until I see what they should have looked like. Don't give up on me!
  • Leida R Leida R on Aug 25, 2012
Sherrie S, and Susan S, you both are just tooo FUNNYYY!!! LOL!!! Susan, one, and the plants can sure feel when is Winter time here in Tampa. IT GETS COLD!!!, and I don't think plants really grow during this period. A lot of them get cold burn. : (
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 25, 2012
Leida - Probably a common misconception for those of us who live further NORTH. I guess we think it's always 80 degrees at least, down there. If I'd really thought about it I do know better. We "hear" about the cold getting all the orange groves etc. @Sherrie - you bought 5000 WHAT? Seeds, plants? Whatever - good grief that a whole buncha something to only end up w/4 surviviors. I promise I will NOT give up on you - I know eventually you'll have a proliferation of something coming up. (Frogs?) PS to Leida - sure hope the path of Issac decides to go much further to the west. All week our weather people have had it potentially getting Tampa a good wallop but now looks perhaps it won't be as close as they initially thought! I'm trying to watch out for you!!
  • Leida R Leida R on Aug 25, 2012
HAHAHAHAHA!!! Susan S, when ever I read your comments, I just burst out laughing!!! By the way, I actually think we will be pretty safe around here with the Tropical Storm/Hurricane. Thank God!!!
  • Marg C Marg C on Aug 26, 2012
so glad to hear that you'll most likely be safe Leida! My family lives near Fort Myers, well not really near but kinda...about a 45min drive. I only say that because no one's ever heard of Rotunda West so I like to give some frame of reference. so anyway, I'm still watching the weather channel :\ yes you surely did murder the Perennial Susan!
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 26, 2012
Leida R, I know you won't see Isaac. The last time the hurricane center told Tampa residents to go to Central Florida to get away from that hurricane it followed the Tampa people to Central Florida & gave us the hurricane. Leida, please stay home. Susan S, I bought 5000 seeds not plants. I must assume 4996 were bad seeds and only 4 were good. I think I'll quit buying plants/seeds on the internet. I have a really great nursery in my neighborhood.
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 26, 2012
@Leida - glad to know you and other HT friends in Tampa seem to be safe so far. I'm so glad I can be a source of amusement for you!! ;~) @Sherrie - I think it will be hysterical of these things ALL come up next spring!! They might just be sleeping right now!! @Marg - at least I knew - I was just too lazy to look it up right then. I used to be able to spell almost anything you could throw @ me but I swear, anymore. . . . not so much. Musta damaged a few brain cells along the way!! Actually, I think it's a case of use it or lose it. Saying it and writing it are two different things!! Thanks for having my back girlfriend!!! Luv u too!! (note a slight twinge of sarcasm)
  • Z Z on Aug 26, 2012
Susan, change your browser to Firefox and it has a built in spell check.
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 26, 2012
Susan S, If any of those 4996 seeds come up next spring I will be shocked & so shocked I will send all of those remaining plants to you by FedEx - Notice to Susan S: no USPS mail.
  • Leida R Leida R on Aug 26, 2012
Sherrie S, just remember that this plant has a mind of her own, and those seeds could also be tricking u to later on all come out. THAT WOULD BE A BIG LAUGH. LOL!!!
  • Leida R Leida R on Aug 26, 2012
Sherrie S, HAHAHA!!! ABOUT THE LAST HURRICANE, I sure remember that. I didn't go anywhere, but some of my extended family members did go out that way, and they came back very upset to say the least.
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 26, 2012
@Becky - well, here b the problem. My laptop died a few months ago and my hunny is graciously "allowing" me the use of his which is now about 99.9% of the time. AND, he even allows the 8yr. old granddaughter the priviledge of playing her games on it when she's here. We've inadvertently corrupted it w/enough stuff so I figure I'd better not go screwing around changing anything permanent - ya know? I do have spell check when Im sending emails and I can go to the tool bar dictionary - I just plain ole don't feel like being perfect all the time!!! @Sherrie - bring 'em on Honey - I'll find someplace to put 'em. That really should make a pretty display - a great big bunch of poinsettia plants - WOW!!
  • Z Z on Aug 26, 2012
LOL Susan. I hear ya. It's hard being perfect all the time ain't it?
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 28, 2012
@Becky - yeah but I just try to endure!! LOL
  • Marg C Marg C on Aug 28, 2012

  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 28, 2012
Marg - that's like being up there right next to WONDERFUL!!
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 28, 2012
Susan S, did you mean that Marg C is next to wonderful ME? Did you notice that we really haven't had a hurricane here or in Tampa. So far, so good.
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 28, 2012
@Sherrie - well clearly I was referring to YOU - and so humble too!! LOL Yeah, I did notice y'all dodged the bullet this time. Now the poor people over in the gulf just have to sweat it out!! This very same exact time last year we had our earthquake - the epicenter was like maybe 10 mi. from us and then right on the heels of that hurricane Irene came up the coast! Fortunately, no damage to speak of from either event except we lost our gorgeous decorative plum tree. The constant force of the wind over the course of hours on end just slooooooly laid the tree right on over - and missed the garage. Whew!!
  • Nan Nan on Aug 28, 2012
I believe this is a summer poinsettia plant! I first seen it in myrtle beach, sc. An old lady told me about then after I walked past here yard and went back to ask her about them. She gave me seeds, but I never could get them to sprout. I sure would love some seeds fron this flower! Be well..Nan
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 28, 2012
Nancy Traylor, you are correct it is a summer poinsettia I bought at my local nursery last year. Then one rebloomed this year. So I decided to buy seeds & got nothing but failure. I'll have to wait until next year & buy the plants again. They are beautiful & unusual.
  • Dorothy Collett Dorothy Collett on May 22, 2015
I've seen these in the seed catalogs as one of the amaranthus. The ones I have grown has a lot of seeds that volunteer where ever they drop. If your purchased seeds don't germinate in the garden try starting them in flats. If still no luck after following the directions (light, temp & water, etc) they are probably old: try a different seed comapny.
  • Sue Kiene Sue Kiene on Sep 20, 2016
yes it is an amaranthus and summer poinsettia. Interesting spot it got itself into .

I agree, it would be nice to grow here but I don't think they would, it is rather cold where I am from, which is Blackball, West coast of the south island, New Zealand.

Amaranthus. It is an ancient plant whose seeds are used for bread on several continents - loaded with nutrients: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaranth

When I lived in PA, I had a 2200 sf vegetable garden. One of the most copious "weeds" was amaranth! It was a different variety with spikes of flowers and seeds, with a little red in the leaves. When I found out what it was, I looked for ways to harvest and use it. Never did it though. Now it is popular as a gluten free grain for cooking.
