Roses should not be pruned until dormant late winter or early spring.Hydrangea pruning depends on which one. I Would recommend waiting until next season to be able to distinguish which is the dead wood only to be pruned out
You prune roses in late winter to early spring. What type of hydrangeas do you have?
Some hydrangaes bloom on old wood and some bloom on new wood. That's why we're asking. If they bloom on old wood and you cut them now, you'll be pruning off next years flowers.
Prune roses to control height and to encourage new growth before the beginning of warm weather and the bushes begin to sprout new buds. Roses bloom on new growth. Hydrangeas should not be pruned until after they have bloomed their first set of flowers in the early spring. Common hydrangeas, such as Niko Blue, always blooms on branches that grew and matured from the previous summer. As soon as the first flush of blossoms fade, dead head the stems; new blossom shoots will break from the stems and the plant will bloom again that same summer. At the same time, remove any stems that need to be cut out of the center of the old plant, any that are obviously dead or any that need to be thinned; Remove unwanted stems by cutting them off at ground level. During the growing season, new shoots will sprout from the roots and grow to maturity ready to flower in the following spring. Prune hydrangeas only during the growing season and do it early in the summer so that the plant has time to recover and grow new branches. If a plant is too thick, don' t be afraid to thin it out anytime as long as you cut the unwanted canes out completely down to the ground. Don't forget to feed your bushes before they bloom, and adjust the Ph of the soil by adding Sulphur (Acid) for blue flowers, Ground Lime Stone for pink flowers.
