Please advise me how I can grow herbs in a pot on a sunny deck. I wish to grow continental parsley, dill, and mint. Any other suggestions? Thank you.

I would suggest using plastic or ceramic pots rather than the traditional clay pots as those dry out so fast. Mint is not compatible with parsley and actually parsley is more of a cool weather herb compared to the other two. The dill depends on what kind. The real tall is the seed dill which may require planting near a railing or something for support. The shorter dill, the feathery, fernlike dill is the flavor dill where the whole plant is used for pickling etc would still give shade to parsley but the temperature requirements are different. Mint - be careful. It will take over your whole neighborhood. Do not plant it in the ground, seriously. You will rue the day! It will grow anywhere, pretty much anytime. So, your combo choice could be better. These really should have separate pots at least. There are many websites that will tell you which plants are compatible with others and growing hints, etc. Good luck. Your growing seasons/conditions in Australia are not real familiar to me but plant requirements should be similar.

If growing herbs is new to you start with pots from a nursery. You can even simply place the nursery pots directly into a pretty pot if you want. Shorter herbs would work better on a windowsill. Basil, thyme, trailing rosemary. Parsley and dill can grow quite tall I guess it depends on home much room you have. Mint show grow well. You may have to keep it trimmed as it can be aggressive. Herbs like a lot of sun and well drained soil so make sure you do not over-water them. Another reason to keep them in the nursery pot is that you can take them out and give them a good watering, then let them drain well before placing them back in the pot. If you plant them in pots make sure there are drainage holes and place something underneath for the run off.
