My mother always called them "Hurricane Lilies," because they bloom in the fall, during hurricane season. I believe the real name is Nerene, or something like that. She gave me 3 bulbs, her last surviving plants, back in the '70's. They have multiplied to nearly 100 and they are pretty planted en-mass.
They don't like to be disturbed, if you dig around them, they may not bloom til the next blooming season.
looks like a spider lily...beautiful!
Is it monkeys paw?
I've always referred to this as a Surprise Lily but have heard it called Spider Lily or even Naked Lady. The flower surprises you by shooting up & blooming when you do not expect. Mine are red but a wild one surprised me by blooming yellow. I always allow the greven leaves to turn brown before mowing In the naturalized areas. Good plant to have.
We always called these spider lilies. They're beautiful! My parents have them everywhere on their property. They plant them around the base of their large pecan trees, and they are very nice in a group like that.
I also have always heard them called spider Lille's but don't know the scientific name of them. I grew up with them growing in flower beds in all the ladies I knew flower beds they must be fairly easy to grow and are very pretty!!
Thank you Jackie! I've learned they are called spider lillies & also resurrection lillies. Neighbor gave me some to set out so I wanted to look up care instructions 😀
Thanks Bruce! You gave me an idea where to plant! 😀
Thanks to all for the responses!
Generally red spider lillies bloom later. Resurrection lillies tend to be white, or very pale in color. Because they bloom so early they aren't always recognized as a spider lilly & are called Surprise lillies. Yellow, orange, blush ones have nicknames, but are usually just called Spider Lillies.
