Heritage Lilac Bush?
I have been given permission to dig up shoots from the lilac bushes on my grandparents old farm. These bushes have been on that hillside for over 60 years. She mentioned that the flowers were white and only have a few flowers on the older parts. I remember them being a light purple, can they actually look white or turn white if the bush is old?

I believe ph and acid changes in the soil can change just about any flower color on any plant.
Our lilac bush does the same thing. Some years it's very purple and some years it's lighter.
Hi, lilacs don't normally change color so my best guess would be that grandparents lilac bushes were originally grown on a white lilac rootstock, and as the bushes aged they slowly reverted back to their white "roots". You can prune them heavily and they will flower more profusely. Here's a tutorial that will show you how to prune them - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQVKWFPZFJ0
