When do you trim back knockout roses - live in SC
My knockout rose bushes are getting so lanky and big that I'd like to cut them back. When should I trim them?
For rose bushes prune in the spring before the new growth emerges or in the fall when they have finished flowering. For Hydrangea, most bloom on old wood so it is best to wait till spring when they start producing leaves to see where the old wood needs to be pruned out
Ellen, these are both best pruned when it gets cold out, usually in January. There are YouTube videos available to show you exactly where to cut and how to correctly shape the bushes. Until then, enjoy the flowers!
Hydrangea should only be pruned after St Patrick day..apparently!!
The answer greatly depends on the growing zone. My husband spent years researching how to properly care for the various types of hydrangeas in the northern climate, and has over 400 varieties in our garden. He wrote a book (coming out with a second one soon), is now a guest speaker, est..as his technique works. https://sites.google.com/site/hydrangeasinthenorth/
Thanks so much, Sandy!! I will def check it out!!😊
