If you're in a colder area of the country, potted plants will not survive our temps unless they are designed to grow in a zone 2-3zones lower than that in which you live. i.e.: in zone 5, you'll need plants that can survive zone 2-3 temperature dips.
Likely bringing them indoors might be best though if that’s not possible, covering to protect them might be enough depending on how cold it gets by you.
