mums are tough...put them in good soil slightly deeper than the soil in the pot. Water in well...in winter cut ,not pull the dead stems out. They will come up in spring and bloom next fall, full sun and fertilize .
I've never heard of a mum that wasn't considered a perennial. Wish I could have some, but don't have enough sun for them to be nice!
In order for mums to come back they must be perennial. It should be marked on the tag.
I plant mine in a large planter, not in the ground, and they still come back. Give it a try! If you want them to be nice and full, pinch them back occasionally as they grow next year.
If you bought your mums from a garden center, they will most likely come back next year. If you bought them from a florist or grocery store, probably not. Take a look to see if there is a planting tag that identifies them as being a perennial or if you can plant them outdoors.
