Hi Linda, I have one in my living room...Draceanea? Clean it thoroughly, including the actual container, take the bottom leaves that are brown/dead/etc....Get yourself a nice big (in your case) basket (thrift stores is where I have found mine). Place your container with plant inside the basket or ??, water it, and bring it to your sunny (good light preferable) window or enclosed porch..Water only when soil dry or leaves drooping ....Voila'....JMO

I always bring mine inside, I have had them four or five years, I water every other time of regular plants. We live in utah.
In New Zealand, this is what looks like a 'cabbage tree'. Early settlers here used to cut and cook the heart of them. Left alone, they grow into quite a good sized tree. Good luck!
