I use them for roses, radishes and tomatoes. They "say" it does not help the tomatoes but I do it anyway.
Don’t put the grounds up against the stems, but sprinkling them around should be fine. If you use your coffee grounds every few days, some will become part of the soil. They can retain moisture longer than the plant itself. ☺️
We have been putting them as a ground cover (aka mulch) and that has been very successful. This is around the elderberry bushes. I did check with the nursery farm that sold us the bushes and asked what effects coffee grounds would have on them. They said although they grow acres of elderberries, they check the soil and adjust as necessary for them to grow well, but never have done research on the use of coffee grounds on their bushes. Oh well.
Our local Starbucks has been a generous contributor, I had to promise them some fruits and I know they will not forget. I call the area Starbucks fields.
The area where we put the grounds had some strawberry plants overgrown in weeds, the grounds smothered the weeds but the strawberries are flourishing, just popping right through the barrier, wow, what a nice surprise!
What a great question and learning experience. Best to you!
