How far back can I trim red twig dogwoods?

I have some red twig dogwoods that I have let grow out of control. I am finally at a point where all of the dead branches have been removed and the cluster has been thinned out. But they are over 10 feet tall and I would like something closer to 5-6 feet. Is it possible to just cut off the tops? Can I do this all at once or should I gradually reduce the height? Would this give me a fuller look at the bottom?. Thanks.

For these guys, you want to remove about a third of the oldest stems annually. You can prune them back to 5-6 feet. You could also prune them down to the ground annually so they put on all new growth and stay more compact.
You can cut them back now if you wish. New lots will arrive from spring on.........
