Christmas cactus seem to thrive on neglect. In winter, keep it indoors so it doesn't freeze. Usually mine is kept in a basement window that doesn't get afternoon sun and I water it every couple of weeks. As days get shorter the plant will start forming buds. Then bring it up to water and enjoy it. After flowering put it back in the basement and let it dry between waterings. When the weather gets warm, I put mine outside in partial shade until fall.

I live in TN and don't do much to mine, water it once a month, it seems to like cooler temperatures before blooming (early December) so it is in a pot and I move it outside for some sun and cooler nights. Then put it back inside in a window for the remainder of the holiday season - in full bloom.
