How is the best way to prepare strawberry bed for spring?

I have heard that I should thin out the plants. If so, how do I know which ones to remove? Any other tips and suggestions are appreciated. My plants are in a raised bed and this will be their third spring. No other plants {except some weeds and unwanted grass} are in the bed. Thanking you in advance!

Strawberry plants produce best when they are young. However, they conveniently send out runners that will become new plants. So thinning out the older plants while allowing the new ones created from runners to fill in will keep your strawberry patch in continual production. Get rid of weeds & grass early before they are harder to remove.

Apr 19, 2012 - Strawberries are relatively low maintenance small fruit crops and easy to grow. They do, however, require yearly maintenance to encourage a bountiful crop. First, take a good look at your strawberry bed. Remove the pine straw mulch you placed over the plants in the fall to prevent them from freezing.
My patch is well over 20 years old. I am in zone 9. I just clean up the patch and dig out any plant that may have perished over the winter. I personally have never thinned it but do add a few new plants each year and we always have an abundant crop throughout the spring and summer. The lizards like them too!
