You can purchase a soil tested from the nursery, however what are you planting?

Garden centers sell soil test kits that will tell you if it’s too acid or alkaline. You would amend your soil based on those results.

and also be sure to check what pH the plants you wish to grow need.

Hi Roxy. You can purchase a kit at most home improvement stores to test your soil. You may just need to add a few things to the soil for your flowers. Good Luck!

I was hoping you would have reason why this problem occurs so I would have some idea. Thanks, I guess I just have to buy a kit. I was going to last summer, but I let it go & just transplanted flowers to larger pots & placed them in my garden. But I'd like to plant them in the soil

Check your local stores such as K Mart, Walmart, or DIY's (Lowes, Home Depot) for a soil test kit and go from there selecting which plants do best for your soil.

Your local county extension agent will help you with that. Take a soil sample to them and they will test it. They also test water from your private lake or ponds. They are a great resource for information.
