Prune out damaged branches in fall. cut off old blooms just behind the head after flowers fade in fall. Some people cut them to the ground in the fall to encourage more blooms. Others just trim out damaged wood to have sturdier blooms.

Only prune out the dead the dead wood on your bushes, anymore than that you will be pruning off this years flowers. After it has finished blooming you can trim it down.
