Most herbs grow easily like weeds, especially basil. We start ours in moist soil and keep them in direct sunlight. Sometimes I put plastic over them until they get about an inch or so tall. Then remove the plastic and water as needed. We grow all our own herbs and dehydrate them to use in our kitchen. If you have a question about a specific one, I will try to help you more. Just let us know. Best of luck! We LOVE the fresh herbs in our soups and salads especially. Keep trying. We failed many times before we learned how to get a bumper crop. Now I can hardly keep up with them.
Myself, I'd start them in 4 inch pots, maybe 5-6 seeds per pot. My general rule for seed planting is to plant a seed 3 times deeper than it's size. Keep watered & in a sunny spot. After they're up & growing, plant directly in the ground in a good garden soil.
I get a head start by planting the seeds in a paper egg carton, water well, cover with plastic wrap and place in a warm sunny location in the house. After threat of frost has past, cut the egg carton into individul cups and drop cup and plant into prepared soil. Depending on when you start them you will need to check them at least once a week for water.
Thank you
