Hello. Cutting them depends on what type you have. I have ones that you don't cut back and if you do they won't bloom the next year. The new growth happens from what looks to be dead branches. I leave them until spring and just cut the old blooms off.
I live in MD. I trim mine every year after all the leaves have fallen off and it's usually end of Nov. to mid Dec.. But never trim more than 1/3 off the bush.
It depends on if they flower on new wood or old wood. Here's a helpful article. http://www.finegardening.com/pruning-hydrangeas
There are different varieties of hydrangeas. If you have the bush type such as Quickfire or Tardiva, keep the branches that grow toward the inside of the plant or that cross over another branch removes. When you prune branches it is best to make the cuts about 1/4 inch above a bud that is pointed in the direction you wish the branch to grow. Hydrangeas grow back quickly and flower better if kept pruned on a yearly basis.
If you have Endless Summer or Limelight, they will grow back from ground level each year and can be cut all the back to a height of 4' or so. You can wait until late spring and wait to see how much of the stems have suffered winter damage and cut back to there. Fertilizing each fall will help them flower better the next year. Use a garden fertilizer such as 10-6-4 or 10-10-10. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers (the first number). Do not use liquid fertilizers that have an analysis such as 22-5-6 or something close to it.
