don't know your location? ...plant in ground, yes will die back in winter in Ark. come back in spring, keep leaves clipped back to 6 inches occasionally through spring then let grow from July 4th no more clipping, should be pretty for fall with blooms, fertilize according to instructions we are zone 7 here check your zone.
Mine always came back when in IN. here is WA state they just die off for me.. not sure why, unless it is the type of mum.
A lot of potted flowers , like mums, orchids, etc. are considered temporary, like a bouquet of cut flowers. They're in the same price range. With some work, you can get them to grow in the ground, but most of them are considered short-term enjoyment. I usually wait till they're all dried out and save the potting soil and pot for something else.
Not knowing your location I can’t say yes for sure but I live in the Pittsburgh area and if you get them in the ground early enough to get a good root system they will come back. I usually plant them soon as I get them. My purple ones have spread so much that I’ve pulled them out by the wheel barrel full. They can get Invasive. When the come up next year cut them back about July 4 th to ankle high to stop them from getting tall and spindly.
