I salvage cuttings from plants to recycle,but early frost gets em!

Not sure if it's because I am so frugal or if it is my sentimentality towards owning cuts from my husband's grandfathers farm that are over 100 years old.
But every year an early fost kills or stunts the growth of new seedlings. I know our planting zone says not to put anything in the soil until after May 19th. However I just want to slowly move saplings from dormancy inside to the outside during sunlight hours. Is there anything outside of building a greenhouse that I can do to make transition easier? Sorry to hear of you loosing plants. There is a reason not to put young plants out to early and this is a perfect example. What you are trying to do is called "hardening off", - moving plants outside during the day to get used to the outside climate. Keep them in their pots. The young starts need to be brought inside at night. You can do this before your last frost date. Following the last frost date is the best to keep them alive. If you have to plant them, cover them at night. I don't use sheets as a some say, but I've bought fleece blankets from thrift stores and cover my young plants with them if there is a late frost.
You can buy relatively inexpensive fold up green houses. They are only plastic, but they keep sun heat in really well. During the day you can open the windows/ door to let them get used to the cooler weather and close it up 1 hour before dusk. If it gets really cold, throw a quilt over the top to keep in heat at night.

Sorry about your plant loss.
My BIL is totally devoted to his plants, its amazing that he brings all his annuals ferns inside the home for overwintering (even using his neighbors basement.) So many blossoms and what a gift to successfully care for and not to overwater.
I tried coleus last year but didn't have enough light- Im guessing.
