Is it mandatory for bananas to be tied upward?

I have heard you must tie the new bananas upward to promote full ripeness. is this so?

    No, but if you find that your bananas are ripening too fast separate them. This will slow the ripening process.

    This is a new one for me. My bananas do just fine in a bowl on the counter. In Australia, they dip the cut end of the bunch in wax to help keep them from ripening too quickly.

    You might tie a piece of plastic wrap tight around the stems as some grocery stores do. Not sure what that does to retard ripening but it works.
