As long as there is no more fear of frost its fine to split hostas. They are pretty hardy, and can handle being split pretty much any time during their season, but the earlier the better.
If it's warm enough to work the soil then it's fine to split hostas
Spring is good but make sure spring is here. We still have snow.. enough already! Split them when you see them poking through about 3”. They are much easier to split early the longer you wait it becomes more difficult.
I have split them any time in warm weather. But they will look better and get a better start this season if you do it early.
