Sum and Substance. It was recommended I clip off this stem.
Is this normal growth for a hosta?

I think it's just normal, but you can check this out for more information https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.almanac.com/plant/hostas%3famp
Looks pretty normal to me, they just seem to take off when ready. It might be this is a hosta new to it's area and is try to establish itself.
A factor may be the soil it is in that would stunt the growth, clay would do this. Also certain varieties of hostas do better in certain areas of the country. They grow from Canada on down to the deep south.
Here is a link on the general care of them:

That's how they look in the Spring. Give it time and it will fill-out.
Yes. Sometimes they need to be dug up and split. I just accomplish this recently and the growth is more centered. Plus the added benefit of having new plants to space elsewhere.
Yes! Sometimes they look a bit funky at this point if rabbits etc have nibbled on them. Just give them a bit of time. :)
Yes, seems normal to me. Hostas have such a variation in their look that almost anything is normal. I just split some and re planted to encourage growth. However, it appears that some of your leaves have been chewed on, most likely rabbit or deer.

Hi Mark, keep an eye on this, you could have a pest or two, hope this helps you out, better to hit it earlier to prevent future damage

Looks like normal new growth.
Is that fungus at the base?
Yes new growth seems to be compact and then unfolds as it grows.
It looks like normal spring growth to me.
Yeah it's normal. also depends on the variety. Since they grow from tubers might just be a separate tuber clump. That's how they spread. Might be time to split the clump.
Yes but i prefer potted
yes I would pull away the mulch a little bit to give the roots more room to breath ~ but those are hosta leaves
I would just clip off the outer big leaf
