knockouts are easy.I cut mine back in the Fall after the first frost, usually about 2 or 3 feet from the ground. they will grow up to 6 feet in the spring/summer. keep cutting off the dead flowers and they will bloom till frost. I live in NC so the winters are short and I don't have to mulch.
`` I AM IN ZONE 5,, DO NOT FEED AFTER LABOR DAY. MINE ARE ALREADY MULCHED, REALLY NOTHING TILL SPRING. CUT OFF TOPS ABOUT 5" . CUT OUT DEAD BRANCHES, FEED AND MORE MULCH IF NEEDED.
I would suggest you buy a book or Garden Magazine that is about Pruning Roses, as you will be able to refer to it and it will give diagrammes.
It depends on your zone. In mine I make sure to remove the hips, prune out deadwood and clean up any debris that might harbor disease. Because we live in an area prone to drought I also put compost/mulch around the root zone but away from the stem. Knockouts are great little roses aren't they?
First find what zone you are in.

I do nothing and prune in late winter.
I have gorgeous roses and I never prune them til very early spring before they begin to grow leaves.
I don't know what part of the country you live in. We used to lightly prune them back in late fall ( just before winter sets in ) then wrap with straw and plastic sheeting ( the type used to put over window screens in winter ) then tie with bailing twine to hold everything in place. Then in the spring take off the wrappings.
