Should you remove old mulch before putting down new mulch? If you are changing the color?

If you are adding new mulch it is most likely because the existing mulch has deteriorated and isn't fresh looking. It's ok to place new over the existing. If you're changing to another color, either remove the old or be certain you have enough new mulch to conceal the old.

Its NOT neccesary/but...we just finished pulling out 10 yards of "old" mulch...your plants will thank you for it!

The old mulch will continue to break down and become somewhat of a compost, which will help with the soil condition underneath- no need to remove it.

It is not necessary to remove the old mulch.Mulch eventually breaks down but there is no reason to create extra work.

@Golflady3 Yes, several of us are in agreement, no need to remove it. At the risk of repetition, it will breakdown and become part of the soil.

You don't have to, but do make sure you don't get too deep of a layer of mulch. You also want to "stir and fluff" the old mulch before putting the new mulch on top.
