Sun. Clamatis likes son on the line but cool roots. Try mulching heavily if that does not work put a low-growing plant at the base of your clematis. Make sure that the mining part of the plant gets Sun for at least 4 hours a day

The most common reason is not enough sun. Next would be the soil ph and then pest damage.

Hi Jay, Sometimes it is because there is too much foilage due to an overabundance of nitrogen in the soil, and sometimes it is due to being pruned at the wrong time . Fertilize in late February or early March, and then again in June, using a slow release fertilizer with a lower nitrogen count (5-10-10) and water it in well (Clematis love regular, deep watering to bloom well). According to Janet Bayers (who writes for "The Oregonian") "... Prune spring and early-summer bloomers immediately after they’re done flowering, but wait until the following spring to prune late-summer and fall bloomers. Cut all the stems just above a set of buds, to about 3 feet from the ground. To prevent the spread of disease between plants, clean pruning tools with rubbing alcohol or a 10 percent bleach solution after pruning each plant." HOpe this will be of help :)

It needs to have the roots protected. I planted a Holly bush to shelter the roots and it's loaded with blosems. Also lots of sun.

I use organic fertilizer and every season the vine gets fuller.

Do you cut it back every year? Some clamatis bloom only on the stems produced the previous year. Just leave it alone, it will bloom. Then at the end of the season cut out the branches that bloomed and tie up the ones that didn't for the next seasons flowers.

there are two types one blooms only on new hoots and the other blooms on old wood find out which variety you have. I'm thinking that you may have the hard wood bloomer if you have a relatively new plant? Just a guess.
