Most likely it has to do with the species. There are two types of hydrangeas. One blooms on new wood and the other blooms on old wood. When you prune your plant and it uses old wood to flower, you are cutting off all the buds that are forming. Here's an article that explains it and what you can do.

when did you prune your hydrangeas?
Did you happen to cut it back in Fall? It will only shoot from the base of the plant and have no blooms the summer after cutting it back. You can always try a hydrangea fertilizer. That might help promote blooms.
Where do you live? I know mine don't even have flower buds yet, but mine are usually a little late because the people who planted it has it in mostly shade.
Hello Joanna: Mine was like that one year, when someone came into my yard and chopped off half of my plant!!!
Please water, fertilize and hopefully you will get some flowers from it this year.
I hope that this helps you! Take Care!
Here is a website with info. It could also do with having a colder winter than normal. Hope it helps. https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/hydrangea/hydrangea-not-blooming.htm
