Colleen Walpert on Sep 22, 2015Lilacs do best in full sun. If it is in a partly shaded area, it may not bloom. Most lilacs need to be 3 to 5 years old before they are old enough to bloom consistently. Finally, lilacs bloom on "old wood". That means that the flower buds for the next year, set in the summer. If you pruned it in the spring or fall, you probably cut off the buds for the following year. If you must prune, prune immediately after blooming. Better yet, site the bush so you don't have to prune it except for removing dead canes.Helpful Reply

Janet Pizaro on Sep 22, 2015Jeanette How old is the lilac? Since this has not flowered there is no need to prune. Rule of thumb for spring flowering shrubs is to prune after they finish flowering. Some lilacs take several years to bloom.Helpful Reply

Tracey on Sep 22, 2015Always remember not to prune after July 4th because the bush has "laid down" seeds for next years bloom. My doesn't bloom much the 3rd year so don't be surprised but that next year WOW blooms galore!Helpful Reply
