I used a homemade miracle grow on all my indoor /outdoor plants and they r blooming and growing and putting out veggies and for Michigan thats kinda odd cause we are basically into fall. I used 2 tbsp Epsom Salts to a gallon of water once a month. Its working wonders on all my plants

Lilacs do best in full sun. If it is in a partly shaded area, it may not bloom. Most lilacs need to be 3 to 5 years old before they are old enough to bloom consistently. Finally, lilacs bloom on "old wood". That means that the flower buds for the next year, set in the summer. If you pruned it in the spring or fall, you probably cut off the buds for the following year. If you must prune, prune immediately after blooming. Better yet, site the bush so you don't have to prune it except for removing dead canes.

Jeanette How old is the lilac? Since this has not flowered there is no need to prune. Rule of thumb for spring flowering shrubs is to prune after they finish flowering. Some lilacs take several years to bloom.

My garden center expert said that the bush needed more potassium. I amended the soil and had my first blooms ever!

Always remember not to prune after July 4th because the bush has "laid down" seeds for next years bloom. My doesn't bloom much the 3rd year so don't be surprised but that next year WOW blooms galore!

The people at my nursery told me to use acid fertilizer. I took their advise and it's bloomed ever since. Same thing works for wisteria.

Where are you located? What planting zone? Does the Lilac get adequate direct sunlight? Have you gotten your soil tested by your county extension agent? Have you asked anyone at a local nursery for information on best growing practices in your immediate area?
