In the plant nursery we cut them back and put them under the tables where they would be in the dark and cooler spots when time come to get them out for the season they were ready to start blooming for the season. We watered the plants on the tables so they got water that run from us watering the rest of the plants.

I always put mine in a completely dark closet every evening beginning about labor day. If you have no place to keep it in the dark, find a large cardboard box to place over the plant. Allow the plant to have exposure to daylight for about 8 hours per day.

Shirley is so right about controling the timing for light exposure and dark times. If you're going on vacation during the Autumn, you might want to set up a timer on a grow light.

They should not be in direct sunlight. Mine are on a table about nine inches from the glass on the east side of my house. I do not water them unless the ground feels dry when I stick my finger into it or the leaves begin looking wilted. Easy does it.
