Hi Cathy. I am not sure what area you are in but Vinca Vine is a nice ground cover. It gets little purple flowers.
How about sedum? There are so many varieties.

St Johns Wort has nice yellow flowers. It is a perennial and needs a bit of sun though. Impatience does well in light shade and comes in a variety of colors. Depending on where you live, it will die in winter.

This is on the west side of the house along the driveway. It has a lot of shade because of the two trees that are in the box. The box itself is about 10' x 30', or close to that.
Soapwort
Vinca periwinkle is a good ground cover and it has tiny little purple blooms on it.
