Numerous boxwoods in my yard have white spots on them that look like bird droppings. Can pick them off but are sticky.

leafminer larvae can cause white stuff...not sure if it is sticky though.

Can't do picture right now. It is not on leaves but on stems and branches. Spots of white look like bird dropings. Can be pulled off with fingers, and are sticky. Have tried oil/soap but that didn't seem to help. Would like to try Orthene systemic but can not find it anywhere.

Have you noticed any red dot looking things underneath? Or is the top of the spot kind of waxy or fuzzy? Look at this link and see if either the scale or the mildew looks similar. http://pinterest.com/pin/234890936784811039/

Have you noticed any cupping of the leaves? If so, it could be boxwood psyllid. In that case, the damage is mostly cosmetic.

Scale has been infesting boxwoods in our area and it is seen on stems of the plant. The warm winter seems to have made it more active. A spray with horticultural or dormant oil usualy smothers the insect and the residue washes off after a hard rain.

Snails leave behind droppings that look like bird droppings. If you are in an area where they are prevalent, that could be the issue.
