What is this plant? Good or a weed?

Question

I planted a bunch of plants last year - and I cannot remember everything I planted! This plant - growing in front of the purple coneflower - popped up and I do not know if it is a weed. It has dark stems with thin green leaves. Anyone know what it is?

it looks like purple coneflower to me. A perennial, they'll attract bees, butterflys and all the pretty bugs of summer. It's a keeper!

It looks like Artemisia. It has a nice fragrance and can be hung and dried. It spreads like crazy and doesn't need attention. It tolerates heat and drought.

I can't say what this might be but I always wait to see if an unfamiliar plant blooms before I decide it's destiny. I factor into that decision the appeal of the blooms, how long they last in a vase and how quickly they spread.

What is in front of the coneflower may be goldenrod which is a weed. They grow long and thin and bloom later. They are very pretty but will take over. I can't tell from pic though! Google goldenrod and see if it matches.

I think you are asking for the identification of the green, non blooming plants in front of the coneflowers. It is a little difficult to tell but I would consider them a weed. It looks like they are invading the cracks in the patio as well and since they are taller than the coneflowers, they are hiding the beautiful blooms.

I would have no hesitation pulling them up and planting a low growing border in between the cones and the concrete. Maybe some nice sedum or a low growing sedge.

Don't get rid of the cornflower!   It is great for butterflies and hummingbirds as well as a mat natUral insect repellant!  Yes,  do clear it off weeds.   Enjoy!

I think you're looking for what's IN FRONT OF the coneflower (echinacea) yes?  Can't swear to it, but it looks like a weed to me.  To be safe, why not dig them up, put them in a pot and see what develops.

You say you planted last year so I think it may be a type of Aster. One kind that I have in my garden has leaves like that. Unknown name as I got them on clearance years ago and never thought they would grow back. I would wait until Autumn to see if it blooms, mine put on a brilliant display in September.
