Please help identify this tree

Question

My nephew picked up this tree in Louisiana, but they removed the tags when he bought it.  Now he can't  identify it!  Help!! And thank you!!

The pic is a bit fuzzy, but it could be a purple leaf plum. I have one that my sister gave me. The don't grow too large, since they are mainly decorative but do produce small fruit that birds can eat. I live in Arkansas. These trees bloom like cherry trees in spring before leafing out. They are sometimes called Thundercloud plums.

I think it is a Japanese Maple. Fast growing easy to care for.

You need to find out what it is before you plant it for sure. If you plant and it grows into a bigger tree than expected or sheds leaves where you don't want it to you will make problems for yourself if you need to dig it up and move it again later. Golden rule, always keep the tags!

You should be able to search the internet.  Look for a leaf identification chart.  But I agree with Betsy. Purple leaf plum.

I'm thinking a plum but those things get big and spread. I have a red Japanese Maple and the leaves don't look like this. :)

Contact your County Extension Agent or NRCS office listed in the phone book under government offices.

If you have a smartphone, you might try downloading a free app on your phone called LeafSnap. You just take a photo with your phone and upload it to LeafSnap and it helps you identify it. It's not 100% accurate but I've used it a dozen times or so and it actually has identified the plants accurately. Since it's free, it's worth a try especially before searching the internet or taking a trip in your car to a gardening center :)

Thank you!!!  It has the coloring of a japanese maple, flowers like a cherry blossom!  Thank you for all the ideas.  I love the idea of LeafSnap.  Will have him do that to start with, but plum sounds like what it is.
