I bought and planted 2 River Birch about 7 feet tall back in Oct. they never came out of their dormancy state. So luckily my greenhouse replaced the with 2 beautiful trees full of green leaves. I made the holes larger and loosened the root ball gently. Planted them in the same spots. Then gave them a deep watering every few days for the last 2 weeks. All the leaves have now turned brown and they look like they are dying. My research shows you can't over water River Birch the more the better.

Newly planted trees need holes twice the size of the root ball.

@Eglehawk they were twice as big as the dirt that came out of the pot.

Hmm sounds like you did good, haven't really owned a river birch. Maybe you can ask someone at you states agricultural cooperative. I think they like a lot of water. Good luck.

Sounds like you might have a soil issue. I would take a soil sample to the county extension agent.

They could be just dropping a few leaves from transfer shock but if it's more than that I'm not sure. They do drop leaves at first. We've never had a problem.

Did you rough up the root ball so that the roots were not intertwined? Also, it doesn't hurt to cut back the lateral branches about 1/3 so that the roots do not have to support so much tree the first year.

River Birch need a ton of water....hence the name. I've read that many trees need water everyday for the first week, every week for the first 3 months and monthly for the rest of the first year. Rain and snow will of course provide much of that.

@Teddi Boyda Thanks they should be getting their fill Ana has been pouring it on for the last couple days. I'll make sure we keep drowning them.
